PR Open Mic

March 11, 2010

PR OpenMic is a public relations tool where students, faculty, and practitioners discuss current events, suggest ideas,  ask questions, and connect with others.

PR OpenMic can provide job opportunities for current and recent graduates.  They can view current jobs and internships with descriptions of what the organization is looking for.  This an even better way to locate a job opportunity.  Other websites, such as, may not have every opportunity available.  PR OpenMic is, specifically a Public Relations site, where any PR company can create a profile and post job information.  This makes fora better opportunity for accessing recent college graduates, who may bring something new or different to the table.

This is a link to a job that was posted on PR OpenMic under the section for Internships and Job opportunities:

Another great benefit of PR OpenMic is the current PR news that is posted.  It allows you to see what is good and bad PR.  It also allows you to understand how you should and should not act in a crisis situation or really any situation dealing with the public.  I think this is a great tool for students to see what companies want from the PR people.

This is a link to the homepage of PR OpenMic where recent news is posted. This link has a story about the Obama administration’s attempt to boost Geithner’s image:

Another great tool that PR OpenMic has is the recent blog posts that are posted by members of the site.  It highlights certain posts that may be of interest to you.  They all offer different insights, opinions, and information.  This is a good way for people to stay connected with one another on the site.

I found this blog post interesting as it is spring break now.  It is a story about Panama City Beach, which as we all know, is a very popular college spring break destination.  It discusses how the city is trying to change their image to a more family friendly place.

PR OpenMic has many great tools on the website for current PR students and recent graduates to utilize.

Social Media Definition

February 2, 2010

There is no one definition that describes social media.  However, after reading the responses to Adam Vincenzini’s question of the definition of social media.  There were many responses that fit the idea of the definition.  One definition offered was from JasonPeck, who said ”social media is the platforms, tools and content that enable quicker, deeper and more personal connections, communication and collaboration.”  This answer discusses the tools that are used as well as the communication which allows people to connect with one another.  Another response was from SuzieLin, who wrote, ”SM is all about interacting & engaging to build relationships. It allows the world to connect & facilitates the exchange of info & ideas.”  This definition discusses the of social interaction that occurs through social media and how it connects people together from all over the world.

A response that discusses how social media encompasses corporations and targeting their publics was from irinaskaya, who said “Social Media: Builds relationships between brands and customers and empowers the latter to create customers.”  This definition discusses how social media is utilized for corporation marketing and targeting publics massively.   I found the definition from ValerieSimon including all types of social media and how you can not only just connect and talk with others, but listen to podcasts and watch videos.  The definition says “Social Media is a participatory form of media that provides opportunities to listen, share & engage using virtual technologies & practices.”

I really liked the response from EmilyCagle that says social media “Adapt, answer, broadcast, collaborate, communicate, connect, create, engage, follow, lead, learn, listen, question, share.”  I liked this definition because it used adjectives to describe different functions that are available through different types of social media.

My definition of social media: Connecting with others around the world and the ability to build and maintain relationships through videos, chats, and other types of media.

Foursquare is an emerging social networks that is designed for mobile devices.  This makes Foursquare very popular especially for the current generation of mobile phone users.

The network allows people to make suggestions and recommendations about specific locations.  Basically it allows you to see where your friends are.  It is a little bit of Google mixed with Facebook and Twitter.

The game is based around “checking-in.”  When you check-in, you tell your location and a brief message about what you are doing, and then the system registers what you are doing.  Your friends will get your message that lets them know what you are doing, so if they decide to join you they can.  It also has two features where you can create a to-do list of places you have always wanted to go and a Top 12 list of recommendations for others.

The person who checks-in more than others at the same location can become the “mayor” or gain other honors with badges.

This is a great tool for businesses, especially local businesses.  People will be discussing their business and it is immediately being sent to other friends.  While some sites, like Facebook, allow communication with others, Foursquare is unique in that it uses first person communication with others.  The benefits are obvious and good for businesses.

However, consumers may find this to be a privacy issue.  They may not want other people knowing everything they do every hour.  It is a fun type of social networking site that utilizes the one-on-one communication aspect.  This can also get to be an annoyance over time for others who like the game but do not want their daily activities sent as a message to every one of their friends.

Foursquare and other location-based services are great and fun for users as long as they are used appropriately.

Viral Videos

April 12, 2010

Since the beginning of public relations, communicating information has been through word of mouth.  People learn information through different means of communication, whether it be through listening or visual means.  This means that practitioners must be able to be flexible in their means of communication, either through videos, blogs, podcasts, or just word of mouth.

Social media is dependent on participation from others.  This participation is vital for pracitioners as well.  One part of social media that is sometimes forgotten about is the viral video.

YouTube is one of the most popular sites for to find videos.  It allows viewers to seach through most popularor by categories.  Anyone can post a video, but only a few videos become popular and gain a mass audience, which makes it viral.  These videos must be creative and unique for them to become popular, so that they don’t get mixed up with other videos.

For example, this video is short, but funny.

This video may be something that appeals to you simply because it is funny.  I heard about this video through word of mouth.  This made it become a popular video.

This video may have been viral because it is unique.  It is not the normal video you think of when watching a cat.

Whatever the reason may be, in order for a video to go viral it must be different and appeal to a mass audience.
